Radlein Obituary | June 18 1944. In March, 1944, killed in action in Burma, Oliver Frederick Oswald Womack, Lt .. RE. (Smale's. H. 1936-40). His many friends will learn with the deepest sorrow of the death in action of Oliver Womack. Affectionately known by his contemporaries as "The Pooh", he will be remembered as a vigorous, lovable, and happy personality who very soon began to make his mark at Radley. He came to Smale's in 1936, and at once showed that, while he had a natural talent for athletics, he could also apply himself wholeheartedly to his school studies. His was a happy and successful school career. In due course he reached the Sixth Form and became a School Prefect. He was a member of the XV and was in the first XI for two years. At hockey he was equally good, being Captain and in the first XI for two years. He also represented the College at Squash, and was in the boxing team for three years, and won the steeplechase in 1939 and again in 1940. In 1940 he went up to Cambridge as an RE. Cadet, and made full use of his time there. He was commissioned in 1941. On the last occasion he visited us, he had been training with his unit near Radley. There was no doubt but that he was a popular and efficient officer, and would probably have gone far in the Army which he had hoped to make his career. While mourning her loss, Radley will always have the happiest memories of him. |
