| Radlein Obituary | June 17 1945. In January 1945, in H.M. Submarine 'Porpoise' Ernest Colin Trier, Sub-Lieut., R.N.V.R. (Cocks's, C, 1937-41). Some, it may be, will remember as their first glimpse of Colin Trier here, a small square figure standing alone on the stage in a dramatic competition - a new boy, his words forgotten, with no prompter coming to his assistance, but still looking dogged and undefeated. It may have been one of his less glorious public appearances, but it was one very typical of the character who was to be; and there were many more distinguished performances to come, all showing the same doggedness and imperturbability. Slow of speech perhaps, not so slow of wit, and anything but slow of foot, he became a popular and happy personality, full of tireless vigour and quiet enthusiasm. and a prominent figure on the rugger field and the hockey field - especially the latter, where he showed a turn of speed somewhat remarkable in one of his stocky build, a very good eye, and indefatigable energy. After a brief year at Clare, he joined the. R.N.V.R. eventually gaining a Commission; he then decided to go in for submarines, and was in the 'Porpoise' when she was lost. All who knew him will regret the loss of a cheerful, warmhearted, and delightful person; our deepest sympathy goes out to his family. |
