Radlein Obituary |
March 5 1944. Recorded as missing June 18 1944. In January, 1944. previously reported missing, now known to have been killed on air operations, John Brian Strange, FIt. Sgt. Eng., R.A.F.V.R (Smale's, H, 1936-39). John Strange was a quiet, kindly boy who, although not particularly conspicuous in school life, was a most loyal member of his Social and of Radley. He always gave of his best in both work and play and had many friends. On leaving Radley he worked for a time in his father's business and, in 1941, as soon as he was eighteen volunteered for the R.A.F. His eyesight debarred his becoming a pilot, but he was determined to become a member of aircrew. He therefore joined up in the ground staff trade of Flight Mechanic and later applied for a transfer to aircrew duties. Eventually he achieved his ambition and became a Flight Engineer. Radley can be justly proud of the example of courage and determination he displayed in his efforts to get into the front line of the air fighting. |
