Radlein Obituary |
November 25 1945. Missing, now presumed killed in action, Ian Steel Mitchell Shaw, Capt., Green Howards (E) (Hedgecock's, F, 1933-37). Ian Shaw was a quiet studious boy who gained esteem from masters and boys alike for his practical achievements in the classroom, at games, and in the social life of his house and school. He secured the School Certificate with seven credits, entering the Sixth Form in the Modern Side and obtaining a Higher Certificate. He was a School Prefect and a member of the School 2nd Hockey XI and 1st XV Rugger teams. He entered New College in 1937 with the intention of preparing for the Consular Service. In July I940 he was commissioned in the Green Howards and became a prisoner of war in September 1942 in Italy, but escaping in the autumn of 1943 he reached England in November of the same year. He was reported missing in action off Walcheren Island in October of last year. We deeply mourn his loss. He possessed sterling qualities of character which he applied with a determined will in the best interests of the community, and we extend our sincere sympathy to his parents and relatives. |
