Radlein Obituary June 17 1945. Recorded as missing
March 10 1946. Missing, now presumed killed, on operations on March 5th, 1945, Max Raymond Norem, FIt. Lt., RA.F.V.R. (Macpherson's, Paton's, A, 1936-40). Max Norem will be remembered by his contemporaries as a gay and kind-hearted friend. Perhaps his competitive instincts were hardly sharp enough to lead him to outstanding success in those spheres of school life where forcefulness is essential, but he was always a keen trier and a useful stand-by. In generosity and anxiety to serve he had no rival. When the War came he longed to play his part and he volunteered for the R.A.F. at the earliest possible moment. He trained first at home and then in Canada when he gained his wings as a Pilot-Officer in March, 1942. For 18 months after that he was given duty as a Flying-Instructor; then on return to this country he attained his supreme ambition - operations. As Captain of a Lancaster bomber he had practically concluded his tour of operations when he was reported missing from a raid on Chemnitz on the night of March 5th/6th, 1945. In the R.A.F. he reached his full stature, and showed capacity and devotion of no mean order. He will he sadly missed by a wide circle of friends.
