Radlein Obituary |
November 21 1943. On 27th October, 1942, reported missing, now presumed killed, Rhys Martin Lloyd, D.F.C., Squadron Leader, R.A.F.V.R (Hedgecock's, F, 1930-34). He came to Radley from St. Cyprian's, Eastbourne. He took great interest in his house, and did well both in work and games. He entered the Sixth Form on the Science Side and he was a House Prefect. He was always a keen shot being a member on the Shooting VIII both in 1933 and 1934. He captained the Shooting VIII in 1934 winning the Evans Memorial Cup and Silver Spoon. He was also in the 3rd XI and 3rd XV. He went up to Caius College, Cambridge, and was in the Cambridge University Air Squadron from 1936 to 1939. In 1939 he entered the Uganda Civil Administration, but in 1940 he became a Pilot Officer, R.A.F., training in Rhodesia. Returning to England again, he joined a Spitfire Squadron as A/Flight Lieutenant. He volunteered for service in Malta in 1941, and was promoted A/Squadron Leader, winning the D.F.C. in May of that year. After about six months' service in Malta he was transferred to Egypt. He took part in the preliminary bombardment at the Battle of El Alamein and was reported missing from operations over El Daha on October 27th, 1942. All who knew him will deeply grieve his loss. |
