War Memorial Fund (1943) Ctte minutes 13.11.1948: ' The Hon Sec stated that at All Saints his attention was drawn to an alleged error in the regimental inscription of JC Holcroft on the War Memorial. The Committee asked the Hon Sec to make a full investigation into this, and, if the error should be found to be true, to take steps to have it altered by consulting the architect and ascertaining whether such an alteration could be carried out without damage to the rest of the stone.'

Radlein Obituary March 8 1942. In November 1941, killed in action, John Culcheth Holcroft, Lieut., R.T.R. A member of all old Radley family, he came in 1919 (Smale's, H) and both here and at Cambridge had a distinguished rowing career. He rowed in three Radley Eights, those of 1921, 1922 and 1923, the first of these being the crew which held the record for a Radley Eight over the Henley course until the 1938 crew broke it. Holcroft also rowed in the Smale's crews which went from the bottom of the river to Head in 1920 and 1921, and so began the wonderful series of successes which were broken only once or twice up to 1940. On going up to Pembroke College, Cambridge, he rowed in the 1927 and 1928 winning University crews, being President of the C.U.RC. in the latter year. In the following year he captained the Leander crew which won the Grand. As an oar he had a very easy and natural style and was an extremely hard worker. Of a most delightful disposition and with great charm of manner John Holcroft wiII be very greatly missed by many generations of O.R.s and of rowing men.
