Radlein Obituary | February 18 1943. In October, 1942, on active service. Ronald Charles Gamier, Sergeant Pilot, R.A.F.V.R (Nugee's-Eason's, 1935-40), Ronald Garnier came to Nugee's from Lambrook in September, 1935. To most people he appeared quiet and reserved, but to those who knew him better he showed himself a spirited and enthusiastic boy, who was always most popular with his contemporaries. During his last term or two at school he was very impatient to leave and join the R.A.F., and in the summer of 1940 he got his wish. After a period in America under the Empire Air Training Scheme he returned to England as a sergeant pilot with an infections enthusiasm for flying in general, and for the Spitfire in particular. In an engagement over the sea, after a long chase in which the German was almost certainly destroyed his engine was hit, and he dived into the sea before he could bale out. His Chaplain wrote, "Those who are well qualified to judge, praise most highly the rare courage which he displayed, and one most experienced officer described the action as a most gallant attack". |
