Radlein Obituary |
March 5 1944. In December, 1943, on active service. Donald Brian Milner Fiddes, D.S.O., Lieut.-Comdr., R.N. He came to Radley (Boyd's, G) in 1932, when he was 15. and left in 1934 - much sooner than could have been wished to join the Royal Navy (Executive Branch) by Special Entry. As a cadet in H.M.S. 'Frobisher' in 1936 he won the King's Dirk and the Eardley Howard Crockett Prize. After serving as midshipman in the 'Resolution' and the 'Royal Sovereign', he was posted as Sub-Lieutenant in the destroyer 'Afridi', in which he served for the first part of the war. He was promoted lieutenant in January, 1940, and acting lieutenant commander a few months ago. He was awarded the D.S.O. in November, 1942, for bravery and outstanding resolution when an important convoy was fought through to Malta in face of attacks by day and night from enemy submarines, aircraft and surface forces. He was married in March, 1941. In Donald Fiddes we have lost one whom character and temperament marked for a successful career in the Navy. He will be remembered as an outstanding personality, cheerful, friendly and vital: of those other qualities the citation referred to above makes it unnecessary to speak. Truly a "Happy Warrior", taken away when his early promise was in full tide of fulfilment. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his wife, his relations, and his many friends. |
