Prisoner of War POW captured at Singapore 1942
Radlein Obituary June 16 1946. Died as a Prisoner of War in Japanese hands on August 27th, 1945, Thomas Mowbray Edols, Bdr., RA. (Moss-Blundell's, Newman's, E, 1919-22). Contemporaries of Tom Edols will be distressed to hear that after surviving more than three years of imprisonment in Japanese hands, he succumbed at the moment of liberation. He was captured at the fall of Singapore in February, 1942, being wounded slightly while driving a lorry which was drawing a big gun. Those who were with him speak of his amazing courage and cheerfulness in the Camp. He was most active in promoting all sorts of entertainments, and kept things going by his wonderful good humour and wit. After three years, he had to go to hospital, and, when he had partly recovered, the Japanese demanded 250 men for what they said was a very light job. Tom Edols went with them on what turned out to be the hardest work imaginable, 16 hours a day with pick and shovel. When the capitulation came, the Japs were ordered to bring in all prisoners, and these 250 men, now exhausted, were sent on a 2! day train journey without food or water. On their arrival, everything possible was done, but Tom Edols only survived a week, when beri-beri and fever caused his death.
