Radlein Obituary |
November 19 1944. In France, 1944, killed in action, Sydney John ffisher Downing, Lieutenant, Rifle Brigade (E), (Watkin's, D, 1937-41). Jock was the son of an Old Radleian, J. ff. Downing, and came to Radley from the Dragon School. He will perhaps be best remembered by most of us as a boxer, of which he became Captain in 1941, and he boxed for College for two years before that. On leaving he went to the Rifle Brigade and was commissioned in 1942. He saw service in Africa and Italy, and finally fell a victim to a sniper's bullet. February 25 1945. We must apologise for two unfortunate misprints which occurred in the obituaries in the Radleian of last November. Those who knew Vestey will have realised, we hope, that the first word of the main paragraph should have been "Bill", while in Downing's notice the words "In France 1944" should have read "In June 1944". The final sentence of the notice implied, what actually happened, namely that his death occurred on service in Italy. |
