Radlein Obituary |
June 18 1944. Recorded as a prisoner of war June 16 1946. Prisoner of war, missing, now presumed killed. John Philip Couzens, Lieut., R.A. (T) (Hedgecock's, F, 1935-38). . John Couzens was a genial member of his House, levelheaded and sensible. Although not built for free athletic exercise, he took a keen part in games, and made up by his enthusiasm for what he was unable to achieve by skill. He was a good swimmer, and was in the swimming teams of 1937 and 1938. In 1937 he secured the plunging record. John loved good music. He was a member of the Musical Society, and he did well in the inter-house musical competitions. He held the Silver Bugle in 1938. He was also a member of the Political Society. In June, 1939, he was commissioned in the Territorial Army. He became a prisoner of war at Singapore in February, 1942. It is known that he was in a draft of about 500 prisoners sent off by sea to an unknown destination but his ship was never heard of again. John was universally liked and respected as a school-boy: He saw the best intentions in every effort one made, and he possessed the happy power of causing all to feel more kindly one towards another in his company. We extend our deepest sympathy to his relatives. |
