Radlein Obituary |
June 16 1940. Recorded on Roll of Honour. Missing, May 1940 November 17 1940. In May 1940, reported missing while on active service, now believed killed, Gordon Emery Chandler, Pilot Officer, Royal Air Force. He was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Chandler, of East Horsley, and came to Radley (Smale's H) in January, 1934· From the first, though somewhat reserved in manner, he made his mark among his contemporaries, and became universally liked and respected. His chief interest in Radley was on the river, and he acted as Captain of the VIII which won the Ladies' Plate in 1938. He was also captain of the crew which went out to America in the August of that year and raced against Tabor Academy. He was a School Prefect and a most valued member of his House, and trust reposed in him was never misplaced. He performed all his duties with quiet and loyal efficiency and gave an example to us all of steady devotion. His frequent visits after he left gave us a great deal of pleasure and we shall miss him enormously. |
