| Radlein Obituary |
October 18 1942. On 11th August 1942, accidentally killed on service. David Lionel Brendon, Captain, Dorset Regiment (Boyd's, G, 1932-35). David Brendon left behind him at Radley, memories of solid character combined with a friendly and unassuming disposition. One felt that his heart was in all his activities. whether at work. on the river, or in his 'administrative duties as a Prefect. He had always intended to adopt a military career, and he passed into Sandhurst in 1936, being afterwards gazetted into the Dorset Regiment. He was married in 1941. A friend writes of him: "When I think of David Brendon, I see not only an individual but a type. The British service tradition working in the best kind of home has produced so many like him,-l ike him. that is, in spite of all individuality, in a basic kindliness, simplicity, and undemonstrative devotion to certain highly important ends. There may be things in the national traditoin that we overestimate; but we are not far wrong on being proud of the David Brendons. It is no accident that war shows a dreadful selective power in dealing with them." |
